NIHB Therapy
The Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program provides eligible First Nations and Inuit clients with coverage for counselling, including individual, family and group therapy sessions.
Coverage includes up to 22 hours of counseling annually, with services provided by registered professionals like psychologists, social workers, and psychotherapists. The program covers benefits not available through other public or private health plans, and additional hours or specific services may be approved on a case-by-case basis.
Treaty Indian Status
Registered or Treaty Indian status refers to whether or not a person is a Registered or Treaty Indian. Registered Indians are persons who are registered under the Indian Act of Canada. Treaty Indians are persons who belong to a First Nation or Indian band that signed a treaty with the Crown.
NIHB offers 20 free counselling sessions per year if you have treaty status. If you do not have status, you can access Indian Residential School funding. If a family member has attended a school, family members can access 20 sessions.
