Play Therapy
Rooted in Indigenous values, play therapy for young children honours the importance of connection to family, community and the land through play, using toys, art and storytelling.
Play therapy is a type of counseling that helps children express and understand their feelings through play, using toys and creative activities in a safe environment. Our therapists have specialized play therapy training to support children experiencing trauma or emotional dysregulation. Play therapy is especially helpful for children ages 3 to 12 facing emotional, behavioural, or social challenges, and helps those who may have difficulty talking about their experiences develop coping skills and confidence.
Play Therapy at IPS
Play therapy, from an Indigenous perspective, is a holistic and culturally sensitive approach that uses play, art, and storytelling to support children’s emotional and spiritual well-being. Rooted in Indigenous values, play therapy honours the importance of connection to family, community, and the land. Through creative expression and guided play, children are encouraged to share their experiences, build resilience, and heal in a safe and nurturing environment. This approach recognizes each child’s unique strengths and traditions, fostering growth and balance in mind, body, and spirit.
In Indigenous-focused play therapy, clients—especially children—are welcomed just as they are. They can come as themselves and explore who they are through play, using toys, art, and storytelling in a safe, culturally respectful space. Our therapists honour each child’s background and traditions, integrating Indigenous perspectives and practices into sessions. Play therapy allows children to express feelings, build confidence, and connect with their identity without pressure, supporting healing and growth in a way that respects their culture and personal journey.
